Every body is interested in knowing what actually Juniper SRX is and what it does. Here is a small interview of Rob Cameron by Tawnee Kendall where Rob Cameron explains on SRX and how it is useful in data centers and how could some big companies incorporate them in their data centers. Rob Cameron works on Juniper SRX as a technical marketing engineer or he is a technical evangelist. He’s the co-author of Juniper SRX Series, Junos Security (O’Reilly) and Configuring Juniper Networks NetScreen & SSG Firewalls (Syngress). Juniper SRX series which is also co authored by Brad Woodberg is about to release on 28th June 2013. So if you want in depth knowledge on Juniper SRX series you can order this book at amazon.
Below is a video of a 5 minute interview of Rob Cameron explaining few basics of Juniper SRX we can get a basic idea on what Juniper SRX series is. Below the video there is a transcript of the video which could of of some help.
Tawnee Kendall: What is SRX? Why is it so important?
Rob Cameron: So SRX platform is the leveraging of the junipers history with net screen firewall products and integrating those features into the juniper service provider class, type of routing products such as the M series and the MX series and a lot of users are able to scale a firewall beyond whatever its done before up to 220 Giga bytes per second Qpar which is something like pretty unavailable in the industry and a lot of people to deploy that for specific use cases where scale needs to happen example like mobile or IP Phone or it could be a iPhone where you have web email services things like that because you have tens of billions of devices you need to able to scale the device that can handle all that traffic which is something like SRX can handle which is great for that platform. So service providers can provide these web status services to customers as well a have it secured and their handsets secured as well. And an enterprise environment some thing like this used in the data center because the data center is the heart of any sort of business and every business today uses computers and nobody walks around today with a transparency in their site production like that so you need to have a place so that you can have all your data and it should be secured and the capacities on the SRX can handle the data centers for a number of connections per second we can propose you can do lot of things like that. And besides the capacities it also allows you to scale so if you have before you could buy the device and you can do maximum amount of drupe work. Today you can buy this device at a low end cost and there is time when you need to scale it up and buy additional services and increase the amount of drupe work connections per sac like that with the device. So it is a very cost effective to be able to buy the scalable services in your network.
Tawnee Kendall: So it is the reason why this is coming out now it is because of things like iPhone and new technologies and you to support all these kinds of customers.
Rob Cameron: It is because of the need to scale the firewall to be able to take more and more devices and put it behind it and in the past you would take can say may be have 20 or 30 firewalls used to do what this one device could do. And that is great but as we go forward with the investors every one wants to save money because one of the number one cost for a business it is the cost of running a data centre and if you have 30 or 40 devices that’s 30 to 40 devices to manage if you have a manage service contractor 30 or 40 devices you have to pay for and in this case if you can collapse it one device one management interface very easy to work with this factor. And we have also calculated based upon if you did a 120 one Giga bite firewalls and use one SRX you have got 79% power save which is really huge for data centers.
Tawnee Kendall: That’s massive
Rob Cameron: Absolutely
Tawnee Kendall: Ok
Rob Cameron: And so when customers are fitting data centers for power or building a new data centre they can just buy one or two these devices which can handle all the data centre traffic which is really great. So the question around now is Wow I used to have like 30 points of failures so I lost one or two is not a big deal but if the SRX if I use I am in big trouble what happens with the SRX development is we leverage other technologies inside the Juniper so we are really using what all we have so we took the MX series platform and its ok and when we take this great high end router we can really give a firewall capacity or capabilities and that is what SRX is so it is using same chassis, same interface card, and what we added is ability to have services blade the essentially sits in between two interface cards and so that in turn is something developing internally that you can utilize for other products and it is very scalable and very powerful and what’s going on really nice about SRX is lot of customers are familiar with the Junos software lot of perspective. So this takes that expertise that lot of people have and allow to transact with just few big commands we are able to do all this security features with the SRX which is great.
Tawnee Kendall: So is this all only for massive companies and only consolidated data center or you are actually able to prolong to smaller companies.
Rob Cameron: SRX is really focused on higher end enterprises and service providers but what’s nice is that customers who before make these smaller medium size like thousand two thousand servers like that they wanted to build firewall but they couldn’t because of the cost effective. There are some solutions out there that were very big and very expensive but SRX being marginal we can go and buy a low entry level and they do what they have today and they no need to throw them out for four or five which is great. So today any one can run a platform like they can buy one services blade and in future when they succeed.
Tawnee Kendall: So you plan ahead when your business would be growing and still be able to handle that capacity.
Rob Cameron: Just because it is 250 pound chassis big and expensive like that it’s like you can start at low cost and you can scale up from there.
Tawnee Kendall: Thank you so much for sharing what SRX.
Rob Cameron: And if any one has questions you can post on juniper
